When i first heard about Pokemon heading to the Switch, i was slightly apprihensive. Having gone from a generation of handheld to a more console based handheld, i was worried that the experience wasn’t going to be the same, but i was pleasantly suprised. While you can use the switch in “handheld mode”, it dosen’t nesseserily have the same feel as the DS or Gameboy. The fact that they’ve made this game completely 3D though, really changed the experience.
Being able to see Pokemon scurrying and flying around the place was really cool and saved the whole random encounter thing. Knowing what Pokemon you where after and what you can catch, saved a lot of effort and stress in finding the Pokemon you wanted. I also like as you caught lots of Pokemon in one area, they would make rarer Pokemon appear in that area.
I also appriciated how they implemented the concept of candies in a very unique way and how catching Pokemon helped to level up your own. I also appriciated the idea of when it came to battling a legendary or Snorlax, you first had to defeat it in battle before you could try and catch it, similar to raid battles in Go.
One thing i was looking forward to was being able to bring in and evolve pokemon from later generations. But ubfortunetly it was gen 1 exclusive, so it couldn’t be done. Which was annoying, but considering it was a geb 1 remake it made sense.
The Go Park was a nice additional feature, allowing you to transfer pokemon from gen 1 acrossto Let’s Go. But it did mean there was no Safari Zone, which i feel they could have done something really cool with it, as it meant Pokemon like Chancy which you’d usually catch in the Safari Zone’s would appear in random places like Mt. Moon. Which was cool in the sense of it adding to the variety of pokemon you could catch in certain places, it also made these Pokemon seem less special, when you would be able to find and catch them pretty easily.
The way the layed out trainers and making the game work with a Go style to it, worked really well. It was made in such a way that old fans would appriciate it, but still have a few things different, so it didn’t seem too mundane to them, but keeping it as close to the original for those playere who may have started their first Pokemon journey with Let’s Go. The implementation of the Pokeball controller also makes it easy for kids to play with, i personally preferred using the joy con as i found the pokeball controller to be a bit fiddly to work with. I also appriciated the implementation of Alolan forms and that once you’ve defeated the elite gour once, the second time you go though they have alolan forms added to their team, which make it slightly more challenging and the fact that each gym leader dosen’t nesseserily have all pokemon exclusive to their preferred type, but ones tjst closely relate, like Poison and Ghost for Agatha and Rock and fighting for Bruno, all in all though, this was a great game and a testimont to the original game. Would highly recommend to old fans and new.
